St. Martin’s Church was the perfect setting for the subtle, symphonic jazz concert with master flautist Herbie Mann and the «Basel Sinfonietta». This rare appearance in Europe gave this Basel performance an air of exclusivity, especially since it was the orchestral world premiere of his new CD.

It had been our dream for a very long time to combine creative jazz musicians with the first class Basel Symphony Orchestra. After his major success in Vienna, jazz keyboarder Zawinul performed at our festival. It was a music delicacy, which was provided in cooperation with the Friends of Classical Music and Jazz.

Over 80 musicians from the basel sinfonietta presented well-known pieces in a new and exciting context. In a co-production with the Rheinknie Session, Uli Scherrer (Vienna Art Orchestra) presented a new composition, which had awakened the audience’s curiosity about a unique piece. This symphony project also meant more creativity in music, interpreted by the sinfonietta and several international jazz soloists such as Lev Soloff, David Taylor, Daniel Schnyder and Mark Fellmann. At the symphony’s request, this brilliant performance rang out the festival at the Stadt-Casino Basel.
